The Brisbane Broncos’ push to stay in touch with the top eight suffered another setback on Saturday, July 4, falling 28-16 to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Suncorp Stadium.
With every result becoming more significant as the season enters its second half, Brisbane missed an opportunity to gain ground on the teams above them. Instead, the Sharks strengthened their own finals position after punishing the Broncos’ mistakes and controlling the key moments of the contest.
A hat-trick to Sione Katoa proved decisive, but Brisbane will be disappointed with how often they handed Cronulla field position through errors and penalties. The Broncos threatened a comeback late in the second half, only for the Sharks to shut the door with a late try to Braydon Trindall.
Katoa Strikes Early
The Sharks made their intentions clear inside the opening 10 minutes.
Katoa crossed in the eighth minute after finishing a slick attacking movement, although Nicho Hynes was unable to convert.
Cronulla extended the lead when Hynes slotted a penalty goal in the 21st minute before Katoa grabbed his second try just over a minute later, giving the visitors a 10-0 advantage.
The Broncos finally found a response through hooker Cory Paix, who burrowed over from close range in the 33rd minute after Brisbane’s best attacking passage of the half. Thomas Duffy converted to reduce the margin to 10-6 at halftime.
Sharks Take Control After The Break
Brisbane had worked its way back into the contest before the Sharks produced the decisive period of the match.
Katoa completed his hat-trick in the 56th minute, finishing another polished backline movement before Hynes converted.
Six minutes later, William Kennedy burst through the Broncos’ defence to score, pushing Cronulla’s lead to 22-6 and leaving Brisbane with plenty to do.
The Broncos responded.
Hayze Perham crossed in the 67th minute after sustained pressure, with Duffy converting to cut the margin to 10 points.
Deine Mariner then finished brilliantly down the right edge in the 74th minute to bring Brisbane within six points. Duffy’s conversion drifted wide, leaving the Broncos still needing another score.
Late Blow Ends The Fightback
With momentum finally shifting towards the home side, the Sharks found the play that mattered most.
Braydon Trindall crossed with less than four minutes remaining after Cronulla capitalised on another Brisbane mistake. Hynes converted to seal the 28-16 result and extinguish the Broncos’ hopes of a late escape.
Errors Prove Costly
Brisbane competed hard for much of the night but never quite gave themselves enough opportunities.
Too many handling errors, ill-discipline and surrendered field position allowed Cronulla to dictate the contest, while the Sharks consistently turned pressure into points.
Katoa finished with three tries, while Hynes controlled the match with three conversions and a penalty goal.
For Brisbane, Cory Paix, Hayze Perham and Deine Mariner crossed for tries, with Thomas Duffy kicking two conversions.
The Broncos now face increasing pressure to string wins together if they are to remain in the finals race, while the Sharks leave Brisbane with another valuable victory in their bid for a top-eight finish.
