Most of Petrie Terrace will be grouped with neighbouring Paddington, Milton and Ashgrove under Queensland’s new state electoral boundaries.
The Queensland Redistribution Commission has finalised the transfer of the bulk of Petrie Terrace from the current McConnel electorate into the new Ashgrove electorate, which replaces Cooper.
McConnel will meanwhile be renamed Brisbane Central, with the final redistribution published on 29 June 2026.
Petrie Terrace Shifts West
The change brings most of Petrie Terrace into the same electorate as Paddington, Milton and Ashgrove, shifting it away from an electorate centred on Brisbane’s CBD and inner north-east.
Not all of Petrie Terrace moves. Part of the suburb will remain within Brisbane Central, meaning the state electoral boundary will continue to divide Petrie Terrace.
Inner-City Growth Drives the Change
Enrolment growth in the current McConnel electorate was a key reason for the redraw.
In September 2025, McConnel had 42,427 electors, 5.57 per cent above the state average. Without redistribution, it was projected to reach 53,664 electors by 2032, 20.11 per cent above the projected average.
Moving most of Petrie Terrace west was among the changes designed to reduce that pressure.
New Boundaries From 2028
The new electoral boundaries will take effect at Queensland’s 2028 State general election.
Until then, the existing boundaries remain relevant, including for any State by-election held before the writ for the 2028 election is issued.
For Petrie Terrace, the change means most of the suburb will ultimately share a state electorate with its immediate western neighbours, including Paddington and Milton.
