Ben Hunt Returns to Red Hill as Broncos Eye Title Glory

Brisbane Broncos have landed a major coup for their 2025 premiership campaign, securing the services of Queensland Origin star Ben Hunt on a two-year deal. The signing marks a homecoming for Hunt, who launched his NRL career with the Broncos in 2009.

Ben Hunt reveals why Brisbane won out

When asked whether returning to the Broncos was always the plan, Hunt admitted in an interview with 4BC Brisbane, “It definitely wasn’t always, and that’s what made the decision process so long.”

“Having a family down here in Sydney, we had to weigh up whether it was the right move to come back to Queensland or stay down here and finish off before we move back.”

Despite strong interest from Sydney clubs, Hunt’s emotional connection to Brisbane won out. “In my heart it always kept taking me back to Brisbane and the possibility of finishing off my career where it all started,” Hunt revealed.

Premiership vision drives return

Broncos head coach Michael Maguire believes Hunt could be the missing piece in breaking Brisbane’s 19-year title drought. “He would give us great depth,” Madge said. “Ben has played both positions at the highest levels at hooker and halfback, so it would give us versatility around what he can do.”

Hunt, too, is optimistic about his return. “I’m hoping I can contribute and win a competition,” he shared, voicing his championship ambitions. “I believe they’ve got the troops to do it, and Madge will be great for the club.”

Hunt is open to embracing any role that benefits the team but remains clear about his priorities. “My priority is to play in the half—that’s my favourite position,” he stated. “But playing hooker definitely isn’t an issue for me.”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

Looking ahead to 2025

The 334-game veteran will begin training under Maguire next month, bringing experience and leadership to Red Hill. “I met with Madge a couple of times and everything we talked about was footy related—what he thinks the side’s capable of and how I can contribute,” Hunt said. “Our conversations were outstanding and I’m looking forward to playing under him.”

“For him to come back and achieve something that he set out as a kid at the Broncos, it would be an incredible story,” Maguire added, highlighting the narrative of Hunt’s return.

With Hunt’s leadership and skillset, the Broncos’ spine is shaping up to be one of the strongest in the NRL, giving the team a dynamic edge as they prepare for the 2025 season.

Auchenflower Hospital to Undergo Major Expansion

Wesley Hospital in Auchenflower is set to undergo a significant expansion, with plans lodged for two 10-storey towers.

The project, proposed by UnitingCare (MID-0624-0852 – Chasely Street Health Hub), aims to address Queensland’s increasing demand for healthcare services.

The proposed development includes a new medical building housing various services, including allied health, medical imaging, radiology, pharmacy, and specialist health services. A 10-storey accommodation tower is also planned to provide accommodation for families and carers of regional patients.

The new accommodation tower will replace the outdated Wesley Rotary Lodge and offer modern and comfortable facilities. The medical building will be connected to the existing Wesley Hospital via a pedestrian bridge, enhancing accessibility and convenience for patients and staff.

Moorlands, a historic property near the Wesley Hospital, is not part of the redevelopment plans and will remain preserved.

While the project is expected to benefit the community significantly, it has also raised concerns about potential impacts on traffic and local infrastructure. UnitingCare has engaged with local stakeholders and is considering feedback to refine the design.

The expansion will take at least 12 months, and construction will commence in the coming year.

The project is being undertaken under the Ministerial Infrastructure Designation scheme, which streamlines the planning process. Public consultations on the proposal are ongoing and will conclude on 25 November.

Paddo Tavern Set for Major Revamp in Time for Brisbane Olympics

The Paddo Tavern in Paddington is set to undergo a significant redevelopment, transforming it into a four-level venue with a new rooftop and modernised facilities aimed at supporting the local community and welcoming visitors ahead of Brisbane’s 2032 Olympics.

Expansion and New Facilities

The renovation plan (DA A006642907), designed by Brisbane-based Craig W Chandler Architects, will add a fourth level to the Paddo Tavern, increasing its total floor area by nearly 50 per cent to 5,112 square metres. The new layout will include three function rooms, each approximately 148 square metres, designed to accommodate private events, corporate functions, and community gatherings. A large bar and lounge area will span 303 square metres, while a spacious 480-square-metre breakout area will connect to the function rooms.

The expansion includes updated accessibility features, with a new lift and escalators, and a redesigned facade along Given Terrace and Campbell Street. The tavern’s street presence will also be enhanced with a “green wall” featuring cascading plants, adding a subtropical touch to the venue’s exterior. The updated facilities aim to position the Paddo Tavern as a central location for community events and gatherings, with the ability to host larger groups and a broader range of events.

Historical Preservation and Sustainability

The Paddo Tavern has a long history dating back to the 1870s, and the current structure, built in the 1980s, has been a key landmark in Paddington. The redevelopment plans include reusing much of the existing structure, reducing the environmental impact of the project and preserving some of the tavern’s historical elements. Additionally, the well-known Sit Down Comedy Club venue will remain, ensuring the Paddo Tavern continues to support local arts and entertainment.

Given Terrace

Across the street, another development aims to further revitalise the Paddington area. A new boutique unit and short-stay accommodation project, led by local landowners the Vidakovic family, is under construction at 208-220 Given Terrace. This development will feature two mid-rise buildings housing 12 luxury apartments and 31 short-stay accommodation suites.

A new laneway, named Hanlon Lane, will connect the site to Given Terrace and offer a mix of retail spaces, including cafes, restaurants, and restored character shops. This mixed-use project is expected to attract more foot traffic to Paddington’s retail strip, enhancing the area’s appeal for both locals and visitors.

Community Impact and Future Events

The redevelopment of the Paddo Tavern and the nearby Given Terrace project are part of a broader effort to prepare Paddington for upcoming major events, including the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. By expanding its facilities and enhancing its community spaces, the Paddo Tavern aims to continue serving the Paddington community as a central meeting spot for both locals and tourists. Nearby residents and business owners have the opportunity to provide feedback on the development, as the tavern’s expansion plans are open to appeal through the planning court.

With these changes, the Paddo Tavern and surrounding area are set to grow into a hub for community engagement, providing improved amenities, event spaces, and social venues to serve the evolving needs of Paddington’s residents and visitors alike.

Brisbane Broncos Roundup: Cultural Reset, Mam Accident, and Key Figures in Transition

As the dust settles on Kevin Walters’ departure, Michael Maguire’s previous connections and clear vision for success are already influencing key decisions at Red Hill, where a cultural reset is brewing for the Brisbane Broncos.

Cultural reset takes centre stage

Michael Maguire has wasted no time addressing speculation about the club’s culture, acknowledging but diplomatically handling claims about ‘rockstars’ in the Brisbane Broncos dressing room. “You hear all the noise, at the end of the day, until I meet someone, that’s when I’ll judge them,” Maguire stated on SEN Radio. “There are certain things I know we need to do as a group to see success.”

The new coach’s philosophy is clear: success comes through dedication. “I have only ever seen success come when players want to work hard. And that is what I will be asking of the players,” Maguire emphasised. “It comes with sacrifice…the harder you work, the more things come into your life.”

Club CEO Dave Donaghy has openly acknowledged the need for change. “I’m not going to shy away from the fact I do believe we’ve got some cultural challenges,” Donaghy said on 4BC’s breakfast radio show. “And that’s an area that we’re going to invest in and be really stronger.”

Mam situation creates potential Hunt homecoming

In a significant development that could reshape the Broncos’ playmaking options, young five-eighth Ezra Mam’s future is uncertain after testing positive during a roadside drug test following a car accident. CCTV footage has revealed Mam veered onto the wrong side of the road before colliding head-on with another vehicle, with Queensland Police alleging he was driving unlicensed at the time of the crash, the AAP reports.

The incident, which occurred around Friday, 5:20 p.m. on Simpsons Road in Bardon, resulted in Mam and the occupants of the other vehicle—an Uber driver and passengers in a Toyota Camry—being hospitalised, though all were reported to be in stable condition.

Following the accident, Mam has since voluntarily entered professional treatment, and a police investigation is now underway, reports the Courier Mail.

The situation could have far-reaching implications for the club’s roster management. With Mam’s $4 million contract under review, veteran commentator Andrew Voss suggests this could pave the way for Hunt’s return. “If Ezra Mam is sacked, and he’s on $800,000 a year, the Broncos will then have money to spend,” Voss noted on his SEN breakfast show.

The Dragons have granted Hunt permission to explore options with rival clubs despite his contract running until 2025, with the Queensland veteran’s desire to finish his career in his home state well-documented.

Reynolds, Walsh central to Brisbane Broncos transition

Amid the changes, Adam Reynolds is set to maintain his captaincy role, with Maguire expressing full confidence in his former premiership-winning halfback. “I don’t have any reason [to replace Reynolds as captain],” Maguire confirmed with SEN. “He is a winner. He’s taken that team to some pretty good places already, so as long as he’s fit and healthy and he is right, he is a great leader.”

Reynolds, who sits just 13 games shy of the prestigious 300-game milestone, has embraced the leadership responsibility. “I’d love to do the job next year, 100 percent,” Reynolds stated, while maintaining his focus on the team’s success above individual accolades. The veteran playmaker’s presence will be crucial as the Broncos navigate this period of significant change.

Star fullback Reece Walsh has emerged as another key figure in the Broncos cultural direction, backed by Queensland coach Billy Slater, who is challenging some of the misconceptions surrounding the young player. “He’s got a great work ethic,” Slater emphasised on Channel Nine. “He’s a very respectful young man—he has got a perception out there that he’s a bit of a larrikin and likes the limelight, but he works really hard and he loves the game of footy.”

The Courier Mail also reports that Michael Maguire, as New Zealand’s former coach, had previously tried to recruit Walsh for the Kiwis. “I knew he had New Zealand heritage, so I reached out, but Reece has a strong passion for Queensland and undoubtedly wants to play for Australia one day,” Maguire shared.

Brisbane Broncos Roundup: Broncos at the Crossroads

As the November 1 deadline approaches for off-contract players, the Brisbane Broncos find themselves at a critical juncture. With a new coach at the helm and key decisions on the future of prominent players, the club faces a significant period of transition that could shape its direction for years to come.

Coaching shake-up repercussions

The move to part ways with head coach Kevin Walters has stirred mixed opinions within the Broncos community. Among the most vocal critics is former captain Gorden Tallis, who has questioned the decision to replace Walters with Michael Maguire. Tallis, an outspoken club legend, has been critical of Maguire’s recent club record, which includes several bottom-of-the-ladder finishes during his time with the Wests Tigers.

“They sacked Kevvie because he came 12th and then Madge in his last six years (at club level) came 12th, 12th, 9th at the Tigers, then he got worse. He came 11th, 13th, then he got the wooden spoon. They’re not replacing him with Craig Bellamy,” Tallis said on Triple M.

According to Courier Mail, Tallis went so far as to reject a peace offering from Maguire, declining an invitation to meet for coffee. “I told him, ‘I don’t drink coffee’,” he quipped.

Walters’ absence from the Broncos’ recent presentation night, where he and his wife declined an invitation to attend, has also raised eyebrows.

Carrigan backs Reynolds as captain

Amidst the coaching upheaval, questions have arisen about on-field leadership. Some, including Tallis last July, have suggested it might be time for a change in captaincy. However, these calls have been firmly shut down by star forward Patrick Carrigan.

Carrigan, fresh from winning his second Paul Morgan medal as the Broncos player of the year, threw his full support behind current captain Adam Reynolds. “No chance, 100 percent behind Reyno,” Carrigan stated, praising Reynolds’ influence on the club as “second to none.”

Carrigan’s words not only support Reynolds but also signal a united front among the players as they face this period of transition.

Brisbane Broncos contract decisions loom

With the coaching decision now behind them, the Broncos face another major challenge: the November 1 deadline for off-contract players. With several stars approaching free agency, the deadline highlights a balancing act between player retention and future planning.

At the forefront of these decisions is the future of captain Adam Reynolds. With 2025 potentially being his final season in the NRL, the Broncos need to plan for life after their key playmaker.

Adding to the complexity are the impending free agency statuses of star players Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, and Kotoni Staggs, all available to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1. Although Courier Mail reports that Reece Walsh has agreed to terms with the club on a lucrative extension, the resulting salary cap pressures may lead to difficult decisions regarding Cobbo and Staggs.

The Broncos have already seen some departures, with Tristan Sailor released early to join St Helens, and veterans Corey Oates and Jordan Pereira announcing their retirements.

In addition to navigating contract renewals, the Broncos may also be exploring new talent. According to ABC, there are “whispers” of the Broncos showing interest in the Knights’ Kai Pearce-Paul. While details remain unconfirmed, Pearce-Paul’s potential addition could bolster the Broncos’ forward pack.

The decisions made in the coming weeks will play a significant role in shaping the team’s future and their quest to return to the heights of their 2023 grand final appearance.

Gambaro Seafood Restaurant:  A Petrie Terrace Icon Bids Goodbye after 70 Years

The iconic Gambaro Seafood Restaurant in Petrie Terrace will close its doors on 31 October after serving delectable seafood dishes for 70 years.

The Caxton Street landmark, a favourite amongst locals and celebrities alike, has been a culinary mainstay since 1953. It serves an estimated one million kilogrammes of prawns and 800,000 dozen oysters. The closure marks the end of an era for the Gambaro family, who have poured their hearts and souls into the establishment for three generations.

From grandfather Giovanbaptista to grandsons John, Donny, and Frank, the family has built a hospitality dynasty synonymous with quality and service. John Gambaro expressed his sadness at the closure, acknowledging the significant role the restaurant has played in the community, including raising millions of dollars for charity. He described it as more than just a business, but one of the homes where the family grew up.

The decision to close comes after selling the building and adjoining hotel to the NRL in 2022. Although the initial agreement allowed the Gambaros to continue operating the restaurant, that arrangement concludes at the end of this month. Despite the emotional weight of the closure, John Gambaro emphasised that it was the right time to move forward and focus on the future.

That future includes the recently opened Black Hide Steak and Seafood at the Queen’s Wharf development and their other successful ventures:  Persone in Brisbane’s CBD and Pipi’s and Awaken at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast. Additionally, the family will rebrand their Caxton Street Black Hide Steakhouse to Black Hide Steak and Seafood, mirroring their City operation. All staff from the Petrie Terrace restaurant will be offered positions at these other locations.

Notably, the Gambaro family reassured loyal patrons that they are actively searching for a new home for their beloved seafood restaurant. John Gambaro hinted that the new location would be on the water and even suggested moving outside Brisbane.

Over the years, the restaurant has welcomed a star-studded clientele, from music legends like Luciano Pavarotti and Dolly Parton to contemporary stars like Ed Sheeran and prominent business figures, politicians, athletes, and local celebrities.

The NRL has not announced its plans for the Caxton Street space once the Gambaro Seafood Restaurant vacates.

From Backyard Dreams to Broncos Legend: Corey Oates Hangs Up His Boots

In a Baralaba backyard, a young Corey Oates once narrated his own imaginary tries at Suncorp Stadium. Today, he closes the chapter on a dream turned reality, announcing his retirement from the Brisbane Broncos after a decorated 12-year career that saw him cross the try line 121 times in the maroon jersey.

Read: Brisbane Broncos Roundup: Enter the Michael Maguire Era

The country kid who conquered Brisbane

From the fields of Central Queensland to Brisbane’s rugby league heartland, Oates’ journey reads like a rugby league fairy tale. The Baralaba Panthers junior rose from a bush footy hopeful to a cornerstone of one of the NRL’s most storied clubs, amassing 216 first-grade games along the way.

While the statistics tell an amazing story—121 tries as the Broncos’ third-highest try scorer of all time, nine State of Origin appearances, and three series victories for Queensland—they still don’t capture the heart-stopping moments that defined his career.

From his unforgettable maiden try in the 2015 grand final, which had Brisbane dreaming of glory…

…to his remarkable four-try showcase against Manly in 2018 that brought Suncorp Stadium to its feet…

…and to his resurgent 2022 season, where he crossed the line 20 times in 22 games, Oates turned wing play into an art form.

“Playing Origin for Queensland and playing for the Broncos—I still have to pinch myself that it all happened for real,” Oates says.

Corey Oates dances with adversity

Every hero’s journey has its battles, and Oates has fought his share. He overcame a career-threatening staph infection in 2017, bounced back from a broken jaw in 2023, and weathered the storms of form and fitness that tested him in his final seasons. Yet, like the country boy who first dreamed of wearing Broncos colours, he never lost his fighting spirit.

At 29, with young kids at home and a body that’s weathered 12 seasons of professional rugby league, Oates makes his exit on his own terms.

“When you have kids and family, and when you get to that point in your career, you evaluate what’s important – and I want to be part of my kid’s life and do as much as I can with them,” he reflects.

“I never wanted to be the person who went one season too many.”

As the last remnant of the 2015 grand final team departs, Oates leaves behind more than just tries and tackles. He carries with him the distinction of being a one-club man in an era where loyalty often takes a backseat to opportunity. The doors of the Broncos won’t close entirely on Oates, with discussions of an ambassador role suggesting his story with the club isn’t quite finished.

As the sun sets on one chapter, the legacy of Corey Oates—try-scoring phenomenon, Origin warrior, and Broncos faithful—will continue to inspire the next generation of backyard dreamers.
