Paddington to Ramp Up Skate Park Facilities

A quarter of a century passed before Paddington Skate Park got its first upgrade. In 1991, the skate park opened to the public and just last year, it was reopened by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk following the first upgrade, which amounted to $1.18 million. Today, the skate park in Neal Macrossan Park, Paddington is about to get its second upgrade, based on a proposal submitted to the Brisbane City Council.

The Earlier Upgrade in 2014

“Paddo”, as it is fondly called by the Brisbane Skateboarding Association, underwent a Stage One upgrade three years ago, after going through several obstacles before finally securing approval from the City Council.

In 2014, 200 skaters joined the crowd at the marquee put up by the Brisbane City Council to speak up about their ideas on the park’s upgrade and to celebrate the skate park’s 20 years of existence in the community.

Daniel Pirie of the Brisbane Skateboarding Association was very happy with how everything turned out, “It was a really positive event. A lot of skaters came to the skate park and celebrated its 20 years and the redevelopment,” he said. The association also had an online petition that garnered over a thousand signatures as a show of support for the park’s redevelopment.

Scott Shearer, the president of Brisbane Skate Boarding Association also pointed that the upgrades aren’t just for aesthetic and recreational purposes, but also for the safety of the skaters.

The Proposed 2017 Upgrade

The proposed Stage Two upgrade of the skate park was designed and funded by the City Projects Office, together with the Brisbane City Council. This new upgrade will enable the park to cater to people of all abilities and to add more skate facilities. There will also be improved lighting conditions around the area to support the various types of recreation allowed in the space. More spectator seating will be built and sight lights will be enhanced to improve street visibility.

The second skate park upgrade, which will begin this month, will include the remainder of the park and will also involve upgrading and refreshing of obstacles and transitions, installing more lighting for night-time use, and constructing a footpath connecting the park to the pool and Caxton street.

The upgrade work will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. There will be no changes in the traffic conditions, but there will be traffic controllers present to ensure road and environment safety. Construction is expected to be finished by mid-2017.

The Paddo Do-Over, a Magnet for More Events

This second park upgrade creates an opportunity to hold more events in the area and attract more skaters, both local and international. The skate park has previously been visited by world-renowned skateboarder Tony Hawk. Regular national and international skateboard demonstrations and competitions are held at the park. However, all of these stopped when the park slowly deteriorated, hence the call for major changes.

As the City Council and the Brisbane Skateboarding Association work together to refurbish and upgrade Paddo, both residents and enthusiasts can look forward to enjoying the beauty of a new and improved skate park soon.

Brisbane’s Paddington Sees Influx of New Residents from Sydney

Located about 2km west of Brisbane’s CBD lies the inner city suburb of Paddington. Its close proximity to a wide range of shops, restaurants, and other recreational establishments has made buying into the suburb quite a steal, and Sydney residents are taking advantage of it.

Recently, Urban Property Agents reported a spike in the interest of Sydney residents to relocate to this particular area in West Brisbane, due to the rousing mortgage prices in Sydney.

Daniel Argent, the principal of Urban Property Agents said, “We started to notice [a surge in interest from Sydneysiders] at the end of last year. Just before Christmas it started and it has continued quite strongly into this year.”

Their estimate shows that 10 percent of their sales so far this year came from people who have relocated from Sydney. This doesn’t come as a surprise considering that Paddington houses in Brisbane are considered really good buys. One can get a three-bedroom house for more or less $800,000 based on sales data from realestate.com.au sales data. In comparison, three-bedroom houses in the similarly named Paddington suburb near Sydney are priced much higher at more than $2 million.

This recent spike in Paddington house sales has brought about prices that are 6 percent higher, a trend that Argent believes will continue as the market conforms to the growing demand from the Harbour City.

Paddington Dog Parlour Offers Fitness Training with Pets

After opening The Dog Boutique in November 2016, Melly Frost is expanding services to engage pet owners in personal training.

Ms Frost thought of starting the fitness program for pets and their humans after obtaining her Diploma of Fitness. Under the program, pet owners will do the running with the dogs. Ms Frost takes dogs running as part of the services of The Dog Boutique, but she found a great opportunity for pet owners to get fit as well.

Ms Frost would set up personal training sessions with pet owners, but would have the dog do it with them.

The Dog Boutique business is an expansion of her pet grooming business, Grubby Paws Dog Grooming, which specialises in mobile hydrobaths for dogs. Ms Frost opened Grubby Paws in 2003 and since then, her business has been providing pampering services for pets.

With The Dog Boutique, she took pet grooming to the next level, offering doggie bedroom waiting rooms instead of cages, while the pampered canines wait for their hydrobaths with essential oils or for other premier services that the boutique offers.

To learn more about the services offered by The Dog Boutique, follow their Facebook page.

The Dog Boutique is located at 52 Elizabeth St, Paddington.

Violinist’s Paddington Home Sold for $835,000; Proceeds Going to Charity

The home of a virtuoso violinist and architect in Paddington has sold for $835,000, and all the proceeds of the sale will go to charity.

Violinist Moshlo Shaw, who died in 2015, requested in his will that all proceeds of the auction be given to Doctors without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres), a globally renowned humanitarian medical aid organisation. He was known to be a compassionate human being, so the request did not come as a surprise. Moshlo arrived in Australia with his family when he was still a kid seeking refuge from World War II.

The 81 Tooth Avenue house is a 4-bedroom property with large verandas, French doors and a large dance studio, which Moshlo built due to his passion for tango.

The property was marketed as a gracious colonial home and is considered to be a bargain, considering its size and amenities. The auction price was also lower than the $964,500 median house price in Paddington.

Iconic Kookaburra Cafe moving to join forces with Club Sosay

Paddington’s landmark Kookaburra Café has relocated to a new location to combine forces with Club Sosay.

This came after the popular Brisbane restaurant was bought by Patrick Vines, the café’s former chef and manager for 34 years. The restaurant is now called Club Sosay Kookaburra Café and combines the restaurant’s famous pizza, pasta and burgers along with the snack menu and bar services of Club Sosay.

After 35 years of serving the largest party pizza in the country, Kookaburra Café has closed its old location, which will be occupied by the hardware store next door. The new restaurant and bar is now located across the street at 2 Latrobe Terrace corner Given Terrace.

More Fun, Expanded Menu

The new venture promises more fun to regular and new customers as they can now play board games while enjoying signature dishes from Kookaburra and drinks from the expanded bar of Club Sosay. With its bigger bar, Club Sosay Kookaburra Café now offers more drinks, wine specials and a broader selection of cocktails.
