Score Great Finds at this Bushfire Relief Clothing Drive

On regular days, you can find impressive artworks from local artists on display at The Third Quarter in Petrie Terrace. But on Sunday, the 2nd of February 2020, the art gallery will be turned into a pre-loved clothing market for its Bushfire Relief Clothing Drive.

In cooperation with Girls in Hats with Naomi McKenzie, The Third Quarter Revival Bushfire Relief Clothing Drive will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sales from this event will go to the fire brigade services, food banks, animal rescue and First Nations communities.

“The Third Quarter team and our wider community are heartbroken by the Australian bushfire crisis, and those that have been affected by it,” the team stated in the invite.

“What we are witnessing is unprecedented and catastrophic. 6.3+ million hectares of this land has been burnt. 1200+ homes have been destroyed. 500+ million animals have died. 17+ people are confirmed dead since the crisis began this season.

“We’re feeling a deep, collective hurt.”

Anyone hoping to shop for second-hand quality clothes can drop by the gallery on market day. If you’re not looking to buy but you have heaps of fashionable stuff to unload, you can donate your items and take part in this worthy cause as well.

The Revival Bushfire Relief Clothing Drive will also feature the amazing music of local talents like DJ Relax (Local Transmission), Hannah D (The Space Between Us), Respect Guy (Bad Taste Collective), GIRLS IN HATS, DJ Borderforce (No Persuasion) and Twin Sister (The Third Quarter).

Incidentally, The Third Quarter gallery previously hosted a bushfire relief drive featuring a curation of artworks. Some of these masterpieces from talented locals are still up for sale with proceeds going to the firefighters and the bushfire victims.

Red Hill Cinemas: Latest Movies to See at this Premium Theatre

Have you experienced watching a movie at the recently-opened Red Hill Cinemas in Enogerra Terrace? The old skating rink, which was abandoned for 17 years, is now a five-screen boutique theatre that delivers a special kind of movie experience.

The Sourris family, who have operated cinemas around Queensland for generations, acquired the cinema’s site for redevelopment in 2017. Their idea was to turn this property into a premier theatre with a small but intimate setting, comfortable reclining seats, and full food and drink service.

Amidst the growing number of streaming services or megaplexes featured with IMAX, Red Hill Cinemas aims to bring the classic cinema experience, where people actually go out of their way to get together and watch a film on the big screen. Boasting of five screening rooms, four of the cinemas have 70 seats with reclining chairs whilst one is a 160-seater with spacious legroom.

This is a fully-licensed theatre, where moviegoers may drink a glass of alcohol or two as they relax and enjoy the film.

This February, Red Hill Cinemas will screen the following new releases:

Midway Starring Ed Skrein, Luke Evans, Tadanobu Asano, Nick Jonas, Aaron Eckhart, Dennis Quaid, Mandy Moore, Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson

Beyond the cinemas’ features, there’s still much to be said about the rich history surrounding Red Hill Cinemas, which officially re-opened its doors for Brisbane cinephiles in November 2019. Its original skate floor was retained during the refurbishment, along with the graffiti in and out of the building.

This site was originally the Pop’s Picture Theatre, an open-air cinema from the 1920s to the 1960s. Forty years onwards, the venue became a popular teen hangout as the Skate Arena, until it was gutted by a fire and abandoned in 2002.

“Biome is different because we delve into the whole story of a product, the people behind it, and its impacts, so that you can make a choice to match your values,” said Tracey Bailey, the Founder of Biome. “Not only are we free from toxins, but we go further to consider aspects like human rights, waste, and supporting local.”

Science of Rockets STEM Program Rolls out to Kelvin Grove State College, 9 Other Qld Secondary Schools in 2020

Following a successful pilot in 2019, the Science of Rockets STEM program will be rolled out to ten Queensland secondary schools in Term One 2020, including  Kelvin Grove State College.

Darra-based engineering design and manufacturing company PFi will partner with Northrop Grumman, one of the world’s largest space companies, to deliver the Science of Rockets STEM program in Queensland.

The Science of Rockets STEM program will be rolled out to 10 Queensland secondary schools in Term One 2020, with more than 50 state secondary schools joining the program at the start of the school year in 2021, according to the announcement by the Minister for State Development and Manufacturing Cameron Dick.

The schools getting ready for the program in Term One 2020 include Ferny Grove State High School, Ormeau Woods State High School; Sheldon College, Toowoomba Grammar School, Warwick State High School, Whitsunday Anglican School, West Moreton Anglican College, Centenary State High School, Ipswich State High School, and Kelvin Grove State College.

The program features “Rocket in a Suitcase,” a rocket motor the size of a carryon suitcase which will be the first commercially developed rocket motor in Australia to be exported.

The STEM program, which is also the first-ever in the world, was piloted by PFI at Ormeau Woods State High School in 2019. The course involves designing, manufacturing, and testing of hybrid rocket motors.

PFi General Manager Nick Green said that forming a course around the design, manufacture and testing of a rocket motor was a practical, hands-on and interesting way to introduce space industry into schools and universities.

Mr Dick added that many of the jobs of the future will require expertise in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), and the kinds of ‘hands on’ experience provided Science of Rockets STEM program helps to bring these subjects alive by turning theory into practice.

“We want students to know that if you study science, you can build a rocket and build a career in the space industry.”

Queensland’s space industry already contributes 2,000 full-time positions, generating $760 million to the state’s economy each year, with the capacity to employ three times as many people and generate $6 billion by 2036.

The State Government, Mr Dick said, is now finalising the Queensland Space Strategy to make Queensland the home of the Australian space sector through a partnership with the Australian Space Agency.

“We have advanced manufacturing capabilities, a healthy R&D and innovation start-up ecosystem that is becoming recognised world-wide, as evidenced by Northrop Grumman’s investment in PFi here in Darra,” he said.

“Leading edge technologies such as this will drive new jobs in advanced manufacturing, so we need to ensure we have a highly skilled and capable workforce at the ready.”

Here’s When to See the Annual Christmas Lights at Paddington’s Government House

For a lot of families, cruising the neighbourhood at night to admire some dazzling Christmas lights is a cherished holiday tradition. If you’re looking for the best display in Paddington, then plan a trip to the Government House this December.

From the 13th to 20th of Dec 2019, the Government House will be open to the public for its annual Christmas lights spectacle. The heritage-listed mansion will be lit from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

For the first time in this long-held tradition, visitors may come inside to view the gorgeous Christmas tree in the Drawing Room. Expectedly, Gavel the Vice-Regal dog will be greeting the visitors but the verdict is still out on whether the pup is in a Christmas costume or his usual police uniform.

Also another first — the garden lights on display will be three times bigger for 2019. Sections that haven’t been illuminated before will be lit up with colourful lights.

The Government House was built in 1865 as the official residence for the Governor of Queensland, who is also the representative of the monarchy of Australia. Over the years, this mansion hosted parties and celebrations during the party season of December, especially when members of the royal family are in the country.

See How Paddington Ranks on Liveable Suburbs List

The inaugural Domain Liveable Brisbane study, ranking the 260 Greater Brisbane suburbs, has been revealed. So, how did Paddington fare?

Paddington is the 4th most liveable Brisbane suburb, according to the Domain Liveable Brisbane study. Paddington leads the pack in terms of topographic variation — its hills allow for great city views. Just 2 km west of Brisbane CBD, Paddington also scored high for access to employment and walkability.

The Domain Liveable Cities study is authored by Deloitte Access Economics and Tract Consultants which, based on several indicators, measures liveability in suburbs across Melbourne, Sydney, and for the first time this year, Brisbane.

A total of 16 indicators were used in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, which include: density of cultural services, retail, cafes and restaurants, access to trains and buses, ferry, employment, crime,  tree cover, primary and secondary education, mobile and internet access, open space, tree cover, topographic variation, coast and beach proximity, walkability and congestion.

Access to ferries was also used as an additional indicator in Sydney and Brisbane and access to trams was measured in Melbourne. Also, for Brisbane and Sydney, airport noise was also considered, and for Sydney alone, harbour and ocean views.

Surprising it may seem, but what the study revealed is that higher-density suburbs are more likely to be liveable, due mainly to the older suburbs undergoing transformation may likely experience increased traffic congestion. The findings underscore the suburbs ability to provide amenities for its residents to make it more liveable.

Normanby Hotel in Red Hill Reopens as a Family-Friendly Establishment after $3.5M Revitalisation

In May 2019, Normanby Hotel in Red Hill underwent a four-month, $3.5-million refurbishment from its new owners, the Pelathon Management Group headed by Jaz Mooney. After the transformation, the hotel has reopened to reclaim its original stature as a family-friendly establishment.

Gone are the boozy and wild car park parties that have bothered the locals for years. Instead, Mr Mooney and his team have rebuilt the heritage-listed site as a beautiful pub and sports lounge with poker machines and several function rooms for private parties on the second floor.

Pelathon Management Group sought the help of the Winchester Group under Shaun Dunleavy to revitalise the hotel. Apart from bringing back the structure to its old glory, the designers replanted a new, large fig tree to replace the plant missing from the site since 2016.

Like the hotel that was erected in 1890, the fig tree became an iconic landmark in Red Hill. Its replanting also symbolizes the hotel’s return to its old roots, where new memories could flourish.

The Normanby Hotel, which re-opened in the spring, also features an on-site craft brewery. The establishment even welcomes families with their dogs in some of its assigned spaces.

Pelathon Management Group won a two-year lease for the hotel after its purchase in May for $11 million. Their takeover comes as plans to build a 15-storey complex around to the hotel were rejected by the Council.

Mr Mooney also said that the car park area will be enhanced next year while considering how to redevelop its next-door sites.

The developer, who is credited for also revitalising the Grand Hotel at Central Station, said that he’s really a publican at heart with an extensive background and restoration. He believes in protecting Australia’s heritage sites.

The Normandby Hotel was built in 1890 by the Burtons, whose generations of family members ran the hotel until 1944. It was named after the Normanby Fiveways adjacent to the hotel.

Auchenflower Makes Big Leap Forward in Most Expensive Brisbane Suburbs List

The 20 most expensive Brisbane suburbs have been revealed and the list saw Auchenflower making a big leap from 12th to third place.

New Farm is once again the top-performing suburb in terms of median house price, according to Domain’s latest report. New Farm’s median house price stands at $1,462,500; enough to grab the top spot despite a 13 percent decrease from $1.7 million in 2018.

Sharing the spotlight with New Farm is Auchenflower, which climbed to third spot with $1.275 million median house price from 12th place a year ago and a $1.11 million median house price. That’s an 11.4 percent increase year-on-year and a whopping 57.4 percent five-year increase.

Experts attribute Auchenflower’s meteoric rise to a variety of amenities which makes it very appealing to property buyers, particularly the Wesley hospital, Milton State School and the adjacent Frew Park.

Neighbouring Paddington also made the list, ranking 7th with a median house price of  $1,115,500. Other suburbs that made it to the top ten are Bulimba, Chelmer, St Lucia, Fig Tree Pocket, Brookfield, Clayfield, and Balmoral.
